La Boite's extraordinary verbatim-theatre work, The Village showcases the cultural diversity of Australia and honours the courage, strength and determination of the women, men and children who have made this country their new home.

The Village uses the verbatim stories of refugees and people seeking asylum to guide audiences on an experiential journey.

Witness how ordinary people have found themselves in extraordinary situations and persevered to tell their life-changing stories. Audiences will engage with these stories first hand through an interactive performance experience.

Some specific requirements for a tour of The Village include:

  • A weather-proof space for the beginning and end of the production, and to store the set pieces between performances. A marquee or tent, or other structure with a roof would work approx 12m x 10m, with an opening at least 3m wide for the set pieces to travel through.
  • Following the introduction in an enclosed space, audience members are divided into groups of 5-6 people to travel between the performances ‘stations’ which can be set out in spaces around the initial starting point, ideally about 10-15m apart.
  • In the event of wet weather, an undercover space would be located for each of the 5-6 performance ‘stations’, however in fine weather these stations can be in the open air

La Boite is a story of people, passion, purpose and place. We hold a unique place in the hearts and minds of artists and audiences in Brisbane. For the past nine decades La Boite has represented the adventurous and alternative. There has always been a strong focus on the development of new work and artists, and today it is no different.

The stories, ideas and voices of our city and country are many and varied and as such La Boite seeks to represent and engage in this beautiful and rich diversity; the diversity of form, of ideas, ethnicity, gender – of identity.

Theatre has the capacity to embrace difference in so many ways. At La Boite, we push the boundaries of form by collaborating with some extraordinary partners to stretch the boundaries of theatre practice in Australia.

Unique Selling Point

The Village is a deeply personal story-telling experience that’ll appeal to a very broad audience. The form, as interactive verbatim theatre, is highly accessible. Initially created with secondary students in mind, everyone is welcome to enjoy this collaborative theatre project.

Venues with access to outdoor sites and a focus on growing and retaining culturally diverse audiences, would be the ideal touring partners. The work can be adapted to most outdoor spaces, but will quire a weather-proof space for the beginning and end of the production.

Marketing & Communications assistance, and basic tech support and staffing will be required from each venue.

Marketing Materials

A large pack of marketing materials and additional resources are available for venues and can be modified by La Boite to suit venue needs. These include:

  • Posters
  • Trailer
  • Extensive collection of rehearsal and production images
  • Flyers
  • Print advertising
  • Education Resources

Community Engagement

The Village was programmed in association with MDA Ltd, with a focus on engaging culturally diverse audiences, as well as catering to the breadth of lived experiences in this city and Australia more widely. The work has specific appeal to refugee and asylum seeker audiences, but is also a work which speaks to a range of immigrant experiences in this country.

Community engagement activities with culturally specified groups, refugee and asylum seeker organisations, and schools are all possible. La Boite staff will work with presenters to identify potential community engagement activities.
